Established in the small village of Mid Calder in 1747, this pub is one of the busiest meeting places in the area. Black Bull Inn is at the heart of the community, and enjoys a prime location, sitting snugly in the shadow of its new town neighbour, Livingston, close to nearby rail links. Uphall & Livingston South Stations are the nearest railway stations with access to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Regular public transport is available in and out of Edinburgh as well as locally around the Calders and Livingston. Lothian Bus operate the X27 & X28 services, with First Bus also running the 23 service, all of which go between Edinburgh and Bathgate stopping in Mid Calder.

Our experience

Sorry was not up to usual standard of food that we have had on previous visits. We had a starter of nachos to share. We normally get the one about £7.50 and was charged £11.50. There was just not enough topping on this to cover for the larger plate of nachos charge. They should check before what size required but if we ever go again I will mind to ask. The main meals. We’re just not as good as normal. My husbands steak baguette is usually so well portioned but unfortunately the tiny tiny steak bits were not enough to say adequate filling for the baguette. I got the scampi which was very watery when cut into. I ate a few bits but was really wary I had a wee doggy bag in handbag and I took back home for wee cat . The chips I have to say were some of the nicest crispy chips I have tasted and really enjoyed them. The peas I was able to count at 14 so portion for tiny garden peas was very sparse but the 14 of them tasted okay. I think it’s just been a bad night. We may have booked too late as they closed at 8.30pm. There was apparently no cleaner coming in the morning and the place had to close early. The staff were all lovely as usual and very attentive. I just think it may have been a bad night .

Great food and service

The fish Tuesday night could be a regular thing for us. It was delicious and a great deal. The service was great and bar/restaurant was a busy place tonight. It’s nice to see a local business thriving. Happy to support local businesses.
